Naught Forbidden Fruit

Nov 5, 2025

The Naught Forbidden Fruit is one of our signature Sangiovese creations, built around the world's first Sangiovese Gin, which we invented at our Eltham distillery in 2021. Pineapple, lime, blue curacao, and our own falernum, shaken hard and poured into a chilled rocks glass. Red-fruit forward, tropical, and dangerously easy to drink.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 45ml Sangiovese Gin
  • 30ml Pineapple Juice
  • 20ml Lime Juice
  • 15ml Marionette Blue Curacao
  • 10ml Naught Falernum

GARNISH:

  • Maraschino Cherry

INSTRUCTIONS:

Add all of the ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake hard for 30 seconds.

Double strain into a chilled rocks glass.

To finish, garnish with a maraschino cherry on a skewer.

The Naught Forbidden Fruit: a quick history

The Forbidden Fruit was created at our Eltham bar to showcase the tropical side of our Sangiovese Gin. We invented Sangiovese Gin in 2021, the world's first, by macerating Yarra Valley sangiovese grapes in our Australian Dry Gin for two months before pressing and refortifying. The result is a gin with natural red-fruit sweetness and a luminous ruby colour, which makes it a natural fit for tropical builds where most fruit gins disappear under pineapple and citrus.

The combination of pineapple, lime, blue curacao, and our house falernum builds layers of tropical fruit and Caribbean spice over the sangiovese, which gives the cocktail its signature warm, deep red colour against the chilled rocks. It is the most theatrical of our Sangiovese cocktails, and the one most likely to start an argument about how something this fun can also be this complex.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Naught Forbidden Fruit?

The Naught Forbidden Fruit is a signature Naught Distilling cocktail built on the world's first Sangiovese gin. It combines Sangiovese Gin with pineapple, lime, blue curacao, and our own falernum, shaken and served over ice with a maraschino cherry.

What is Sangiovese Gin?

Sangiovese Gin is a fruit gin made by macerating Yarra Valley sangiovese grapes in our Australian Dry Gin for two months, then lightly pressing and refortifying with more Australian Dry to 37.5% ABV. Naught invented it in 2021. It is the world's first sangiovese gin.

Why blue curacao?

The blue curacao adds the orange-peel sweetness of a classic curacao, but the blue colour shifts the visual interplay with the deep ruby of the Sangiovese gin. The two together produce the cocktail's distinctive warm-red, almost garnet finish in the glass.

Can I make this with a different gin?

The cocktail was designed around Naught Sangiovese Gin specifically. The natural sweetness and red-fruit character of the macerated grapes are what balance the pineapple and curacao, and a standard dry gin will leave the drink thin and overly sweet. For the proper Forbidden Fruit, the Sangiovese is essential.
